Google runs out of 16GB Nexus 7 tablets

It seems as though Google and Asus have underestimated just how popular the 16GB version of their Nexus 7 tablet would be less than a month after launch.

Google has now been forced to stop further units from being ordered through the Google Play store. Instead of an “Add to Cart” button, you now have a “Coming Soon” message and the option to be emailed when there is stock again.

Anyone who managed to get their order in earlier this week should still receive a Nexus 7 without much delay. It seems Google made the switch to a coming soon status as soon as stock ran out rather than allowing orders for tablets that would take a while to manufacture.

The mistake Google has apparently made is to think someone opting to buy through the Google Play store would be more inclined to choose the 8GB model. The reason? They are more aware and eager to use the cloud, and therefore don’t require the extra storage space. But everyone always wants more storage if they can get it, right?

If you’re desperate for a Nexus 7 they are still available online, although you’ll have to settle for the 8GB version. Other retailers may also have stock of the 16GB model, but with Google halting online sales they are sure to get snapped up quickly.

It’s worth thinking about what you are going to use the tablet for, though. If web surfing, movie streaming, and checking your email will be the primary uses, then 8GB is going to be more than enough. It’s only if you start downloading lots of apps and creating lots of data that the storage limit may become an issue.
